Talk on Staying Safe Online

Online banking, emails, text messages and shopping online are part of everyday life, but how do you know who you can trust? How can you tell whether a message from your bank is genuine? What should you do if you receive a suspicious text? And how on earth are you supposed to remember all those passwords?

reBetchworth are running a friendly, informal IT security session for local residents, particularly aimed at those who don’t consider themselves technology experts.

  • How to create good passwords that are still easy to remember
  • Which passwords are particularly important to protect
  • What two-factor authentication is and why it helps
  • How to recognise phishing emails, scam texts and fraudulent phone calls
  • What to do when you’re not sure whether a message or caller is genuine
  • How to use online banking and other online services more safely
  • What to do if you think you’ve fallen for a scam
  • How to setup what3words in case you get lost
  • What are cookies and how to delete them

This will be an informal, patient and interactive session, using real-life examples and giving you simple, practical rules that are easy to remember.

The session will run at your pace and there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss scams or suspicious messages you’ve encountered yourself.

This is a free event, please visit https://www.re-betchworth.org/Articles/748432/Staying_Safe_Online.aspx to register your place. If you struggle with the booking system, please email rebetchworth@gmail.com for help.
